My life, between the ages of 17 to
my mid twenties, is pretty much a haze. I guess one could say that I was a
part of the “Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll” generation (well not the Sex part so
much but the other two for sure). I had been there, done that from being engaged
to a Millionaire - living the “high life” to being broke with not even enough
money for a cup of coffee. What mattered to me the most, and still does to this
day, is that my partner loves Me for just being Me. Trust me, having lots of
money and famous friends doesn't mean a dang thing when at the end of the day,
you feel so lonely inside that you wonder “what’s the point?”… But anyway,
those stories are a part of my Journey and I embrace them for what they were,
important lessons that have molded the person I am today.
So moving on… was it a
Ghostly Apparition or just a figment of my imagination? In my mid (or late
twenties lol) I got engaged. I met
Andrew (not his real name) in Florida. We dated for a couple of years before
the opportunity came about that I could go with him to visit his Mom and
Sister, who lived in the New York area. That was the first time I met his
family. I had never seen pictures of anyone to include his dad, who had passed
on. The property they lived on included the main house, in which his mom lived
and a separate Mom-In-Law style house in which his sister and her boyfriend
resided.
We were staying in the
main house, and had been there a couple of days, when his sister decided to
have a party. She invited a lot of Andrew’s old friends and everyone was
sitting out back in the garden - catching up, talking about the good ole’ days.
It was late at night, I was very tired so I wished them all a “good night” and
left to go get some much need sleep. Upon arriving in the main house I realized
that I hadn't eaten any supper that night and, although I was sleepy, wandered
into the kitchen to make myself a sandwich.
Andrew’s mom was already in
bed and since our room was right next to hers I didn't want to make a noise, so
I took my sandwich into the living room – turned on the television and ate. At
some point I fell asleep and when I opened my eyes I was lying down on the
couch. Right across from the couch was an older style arm chair and as I became
more awake I saw an older man sitting there. He was small in stature, had thinning grayish hair and
was wearing a white shirt with brown pants. The television was still on so there was plenty of light in the room for me to have a good look at him. I smiled and said “hello” moving
myself to a sitting position. He smiled back and said “go on, lay back down I
know you’re tired – everything is ok – just rest”… so with that statement I laid
my head back down and promptly fell back asleep.
The next morning, when
Andrew and I were having coffee, I asked “who was the older man that came by
last night?”, he just looked at me with a puzzled expression and said “what
older man?”… So I explained what happened and Andrew’s face became pale and he
said “you’re joking- right?”. I said “no” that I wasn't joking, I was serious.
Apparently no older man had come to visit and the person I had described was
the image of his late dad and that armchair was always his favorite place to
sit. Andrew showed me a photo of his dad and sure enough, that was the man I
saw and spoke to.
I don’t think he believed
me then or even now (we’re still friends) but I know what I saw and that’s
that - end of story. Hmpf. :0)
